Profile: Spotlight on new 76ers guard Khalif Wyatt

Earlier this month the Philadelphia 76ers announced the signing of Norristown, PA native and Temple University standout guard Khalif Wyatt. Wyatt and the Sixers agreed to a partially guaranteed, multi-year contract on September 13th. Wyatt  is expected to be with the Sixers when they open the season on October 30th against defending NBA champs, the Miami Heat, but will also be spending some time with the Sixers D-League franchise, the Delaware 87ers. Khalif is 22 years old and will provide the Sixers with a much needed outside shooting presence. At Temple, Wyatt averaged 20 points per game in his senior season and actually bested the Sixers first round draft pick Michael Carter-Williams in a matchup at Madison Square Garden. Being signed to the Sixers must be a dream come true for a kid that grew up in the Philadelphia area and was a 76ers fan growing up. Wyatt joins fellow Temple alumni Lavoy Allen on the Sixers, the two played with each other for two years and look to team up again. I think this is an important signing for the Sixers who will be looking to develop their young players in a rebuilding year, and Khalif Wyatt will be one of those young players that provides a real boost off of the bench.

    1. It's such a shame that the Sixers released Wyatt, who could of made an impact on this team. If anything, he knows how to put the ball in the basket. Being such a young roster, Wyatt could have been in the backcourt with MCW and been a nice 1-2 combo. He consistently played at a high level for Fran Dunphy at Temple and they nearly beat Indiana during March Madness. I understand he is not athletic for the guard position, but he has other attributes to offer. Did he really have to go to China to play basketball? I hope he finds a home with an NBA franchise. He deserves a shot.

  2. I really wish Wyatt would have made the team. Being a rebuilding year, it is always fun to have a hometown hero playing on the team. Wyatt was a ton of fun to watch in college, and thought he would have been fun to watch even at minimum this season. Maybe they would have even sold a few more tickets to Temple fans to come out and root for Wyatt and Allen.

  3. I agree with the above two comments as far as the potential that Wyatt could have brought to the 76ers. In my opinion he has very good ball handling skills, the ability to get to the rim, and a good man defense player. I too hope that he will find success somewhere in the NBA in the near future. However, the 76ers even minus Wyatt are playing at a high level. MCW is playing supremely well for a rookie, while other players are over exceeding pre season expectations. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season pans out, especially with the 76ers getting the Pelican’s first round pick in next year’s draft. It could put the team in be high position for yet another lottery pick to be included in the starting five.
